Abstract

Speech portrait plays an important role in creating a character image. Jeeves speech corresponds to all standards of literary language. However, the use of a large amount of bookish, poetic vocabulary and complex syntactic structures does not always make the hero's speech understandable to the rest of the characters in the novel. The use of quotations, Latinisms, and book vocabulary in the hero's speech characterizes him as an intelligent and learned person, a true Englishman, who strives not to say a spade, to be quiet and silent, at the same time, these styles serve in their place; to create a comic effect and show the author's slight sarcasm towards the character.
