Abstract

Iodine is a key element for thyroid hormones synthesis. Adequate iodine provision is essential for thyroid gland normal structure and function. Thyroid dysfunction in pregnant women, including those with iodine deficiency, can lead to gestisis, chronic intrauterine hypoxia, the threat of termination of pregnancy, fetal abnormalities. Physiological requirement of iodine during pregnancy, lactation, in childhood is increasing, and the body needs more iodine supply. In such cases, individual iodine prophylaxis with iodine drugs should be provided.
