MEDICAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper examined the problems facing medical education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The paper depends on secondary data. The secondary data were collected from established medical libraries, print materials and online resources. The paper established that poor funding, inadequate academic staff, brain-drain, inadequate infrastructure facilities, inadequate medical research funds, limited space in medical colleges, outdated medical curriculum, management conflict among medical schools and teaching hospitals and strike actions are the major problems militating against medical education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Based on these findings, this paper suggested an increment in the budgetary allocation of medical education. Adequate infrastructural facilities, increased academic staff employment, academic staff motivation, continuous curriculum evaluation, implementation of agreements consented with various union groups, and increased financing for medical research.
