According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the spread of the coronavirus infection can cause viral follicular conjunctivitis. However, the pathways and tropism in conjunctival cells are still controversial issues. A proposed literature review identified several studies that may be relevant to ocular surface disease and mechanisms of ocular protection against SARS-CoV-2.
Although only a fraction of patients with COVID-19 develop symptoms of conjunctivitis and only a fraction of patients test positive for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on conjunctival scrapings, SARS- Further studies are needed to better characterize the presence of CoV-2 genetic material. in the tear fluid and determine whether the transmission of this virus occurred through the conjunctival mucosa and/or secretions.
Ophthalmologists are greatly concerned about the possibility of transmission of the new coronavirus through the surface of the eye. Thus, there is a high risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to the ophthalmologist in examinations that require close physical contact with the patient. Therefore, the examination should be carried out by a doctor using personal protective equipment.
A review of the available literature can help clinicians identify ocular symptoms of COVID-19 infection and follow preventive measures.
