Abstract

In disease ecology, much of the founda-tional work has been done using infectiousdisease systems that are associated with rel-atively small burdens of disease. We wouldbenefit from greater understanding of thecomplex ecology of infectious diseases asso-ciated with very large global burdens such asmalaria, diarrhea, influenza, schistosomiasis, dengue, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis. In addition, as outlined above, there is im-portant work to do to characterize whetherthere are differences between those organismsthat arefirst removed from a communityduring disturbance and those which are leftbehind with respect to their ability to transmitinfectious diseases.
