Abstract

Asthma is a common and trends illness that affect the people of Basra due to the environmental situation as well as rapid urbanization. Chronic respiratory condition is a global health problem that occurs in all age groups and has health and social consequences. This research sought to establish the current rate of asthmatic individuals in Basra, their demographic and environmental characteristics, and the symptoms present in asthmatic patients. This study was a cross sectional study which involved administering a self-completed auto done survey to 400 subjects using a questionnaire developed in accordance with ISAAC format. Information collected comprised socio-demographic characteristics, previous and current medical history, respiratory signs, and symptoms, exposure history to environmental factors. Moreover, the clinical assessment comprised spirometry for asthma diagnosis confirmation with reference to the GINA guidelines. This study also showed that the incidence of asthma was highest among teenagers and considerably reduced among the aged people. Male reported a slightly higher prevalence than female, and the prevalence among the urban dwellers was significantly higher than the rural dwellers. Among the risk factors are family history of asthma, contact with causative allergens, smoking in the house, and parents with low education levels. Symptoms reported were coughing at night, breathlessness, and wheezing particularly in asthmatic patients. In conclusion, this study shows the high prevalence of asthma in Basra especially in urban regions and focuses on the necessity for further public health approaches to reduce the environmental and socio-economic risk factors and enhance the management of asthma in the area.
