RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF FRACTURE CASES AT VETERINARY CLINIC, SOKOTO

Orthopedic fracture is a complete or partial break in continuity of bone as results of trauma, overuse and diseases that weaken bones. The study was aimed at the total number of fracture cases in ovine and caprine species presented to the veterinary clinic Sokoto under the five years (2016-2020) of study in which the breed, age, types of fracture, management methods and the complications involved were analyzed. The results show that out of 276 fracture cases for both species, the incidence of fracture cases in ovine species was 191 while caprine species was 85, adult animals were more affected than the young animals, radio-ulna fracture cases were more prevalent than other fracture types. In conclusion, this study established that the fracture cases in adult animals were higher than in young animals and the incidence was higher in red Sokoto goat and Uda breed in caprine and ovine species respectively. The incident of postsurgical complications in the study area was higher in open reduction internal fixation management than in closed reduction.
