KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES WITH RESPECT TO STROKE IN THE POPULATION OF YAOUNDE CITY, CAMEROON
Abstract
Background: The awareness of Stroke within the population of Yaounde city-Cameroon is a major problem
Objectives: The aim of the study was to find out the awareness on Stroke among the population of Yaoundé, Centre Region Cameroon.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study where data was collected from 785 participants in all the 6 Health Districts of Yaoundé city. This was done through a semi-structured questionnaire, administered by trained personnel to collect demographic data, signs and symptoms, risk factors and the prevention of stroke. Data management and analysis were done with Epi Info software version 7.1.3.3.
Results: A total of 778 respondents were included, 24.45% represented rural area resident, Females were more represented 52.31%, about 91.13% had heard about Stroke, 46.65% knew at least a friend or someone with stroke, and 5.03% have had Stroke at least one time in their life.
Conclusion: The study revealed that general knowledge on Stroke was high, but recognition of its signs and symptoms was low. There is need for educational programs to be integrated in on-going programs in both health facilities and Community in Yaounde
