Abstract

Tertiary education in Nigeria is faced with numerous problems which is affecting its performance, and this is responsible for the poor ranking among higher institutions in the World. This paper analyzed the various problems faced by tertiary institution in Nigeria. Both primary and secondary data were employed in the paper discussion. The paper concludes that inadequate funding, shortage of infrastructure, inadequate lecturers, strike actions, brain-drain, corruption, poor research programme, weak administrators, poor supervision and insecurity challenges constitutes a major problems facing the tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Adequate funding, employment of adequate lecturers, provision of adequate infrastructure, effective supervision, investment in research programme, deployment of anti-corruption agencies for corruption fighting, appointment of competent administrators and provision of adequate security were advanced as the solutions to the problems.
