Current Functions of Apposition Constructions in English
Abstract
This article investigates the functions of apposition constructions in English, highlighting that the phenomenon of apposition is a distinct type of syntactic relationship. The appositive construction in a sentence serves to complement and clarify the main expression, creating an effect of surprise while also complicating the structure of the sentence by introducing additional predication. Moreover, the reflections and considerations about appositive constructions and their integral parts—the appositive elements—emphasize that appositive elements, as communicative units of speech, exhibit an extraordinary range of diverse functions
