Metastatic involvement of the lymph nodes of the neck occurs most often in cancer of the head and neck organs. The main method of treating regional metastases is surgical, i.e. performing various cervical dissections. In modern oncology, functional-sparing operations are widely implemented in practice. Performing functionally sparing cervical dissections became possible due to the knowledge of the regularities of metastasis of various tumors of this localization to the lymph nodes of the neck. In this paper, the necessity of introducing a modern classification of neck lymph node levels in oncological practice is justified.
