Abstract

Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems stick to the mucus layer that covers the mucosal epithelial surface. This interaction with mucus and mucin molecules helps the drug stay longer at the absorption site. Drugs that act locally or are best absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) benefit from staying longer in the GIT, as it boosts drug levels in the blood and improves their effectiveness. This review explains how mucoadhesion works, the factors that affect mucoadhesive devices, and the different types of mucoadhesive dosage forms.
