Abstract

Open surgery is still the gold standard for primary inguinal hernia repair in general surgery, even if laparoscopy is an option. In adults, the purpose of this research was to compare the recurrence and postoperative consequences of mesh alone (MA) repair with mixed darn (CMD) surgery for inguinal hernias. Between 2018 and 2022, 280 patients who had primary inguinal hernias repaired at our institutions were part of a prospective randomized trial. Recurrence rates, surgical complications, length of stay in the hospital, and time to return to normal activities were all evaluated. Two groups of 140 patients each underwent CMD repair (Group 1) and MA repair (Group 2), with patients randomly allocated to each. A three-year period was used for patient monitoring. In contrast to CMD's 72.95 minutes, MA's average operating time was 62.5 minutes. Both groups took around three weeks to go back to their regular work schedules. Patients undergoing CMD repair had postoperative difficulties; nevertheless, no recurrences were noted. The length of time spent in the hospital and the amount of pain felt after surgery were comparable in the two groups. After three years, patients who had CMD repair were less likely to have recurrence than those who underwent MA; nevertheless, both groups experienced comparable levels of surgical complications, lengths of hospital stays, and rates of return to routine activities. When comparing CMD repair to MA repair, the operating time was somewhat longer.
