Abstract

The proliferation of Telegram from a conventional messaging app into a multi-functional platform has made it a staple on millions of smartphones globally. While lauded for its innovative features, Telegram has raised concerns regarding the security and privacy of users' data, as its functionalities extend to encompass diverse aspects of modern life beyond communication. This article delves into the tension between the majority's trust in Telegram's security and the skepticism raised by cybersecurity experts. The encryption mechanism serves as the cornerstone of data security in messaging apps, and Telegram employs its proprietary cryptographic protocol, MTProto. Despite Telegram's assertion of MTProto's trustworthiness, its limited scrutiny and untested nature have spurred critiques. Security vulnerabilities have been identified, though largely theoretical. Moreover, Telegram's approach to encryption differs from rivals like WhatsApp and Signal, which utilize end-to-end encryption by default for all messages and calls. The article also highlights Telegram's compliance with government regulations, illustrating instances where the app yielded to government requests, raising questions about data confidentiality. Additionally, the evolution of Telegram's login process, including vulnerabilities that existed prior to two-step authentication implementation, is discussed. Though improvements have been made, users still face risks if locked out of their accounts. Ultimately, the article asserts that users' trust hinges on incomplete scrutiny of Telegram's security mechanisms and highlights the importance of scrutinizing data storage and transmission practices. In conclusion, the dilemma arises whether to fully entrust sensitive data and conversations to Telegram or heed the principle of "Trust No One" in the realm of data security.
